Sustainability used to be a nice-to-have line in a media plan. It’s becoming a tender requirement. Agencies and brands — under their own net-zero commitments and frameworks like Ad Net Zero — increasingly ask a media owner for the carbon footprint of a campaign, and a network that can’t answer is a network that gets cut from the shortlist. The good news is that DOOH has a genuinely credible sustainability story, and a beauty network’s footprint is small and measurable. This guide is how to measure your per-impression footprint, cut the emissions that actually matter, and report it honestly — without greenwashing that collapses under scrutiny.

What actually drives a DOOH network’s footprint

Before measuring, know where the carbon is — most of it is in one place, which makes this tractable. We break the lifecycle down in DOOH sustainability & carbon; the hierarchy for a beauty network:

  • Operational energy (the big one): the electricity to power the screens and media players, day in, day out. For a network of always-on displays, this dominates the footprint.
  • Embodied carbon: the manufacturing of the screens and hardware — real, but a one-time cost amortised over years of life, and largely outside your direct control once you’ve bought commercial-grade kit.
  • Data and delivery: content distribution, CMS, ad-serving — small relative to screen power.
  • What beauty mostly avoids: no print, no dedicated structure, no field-team travel to repaper a billboard. Indoor screens often share venue power and HVAC that’s running anyway.

The practical implication: if you want to cut your footprint, go after screen power. Everything else is rounding error or sunk cost.

Measuring a per-impression footprint

Buyers don’t compare networks on total tonnes — they compare on grams of CO₂e per impression, so a campaign’s footprint can be summed across channels. To produce that number:

  1. Meter the energy. Measure or spec the real power draw of each screen + player (watts), times hours on. Duty cycle and brightness matter — a screen dimmed for indoor conditions draws materially less than one run at full outdoor brightness.
  2. Apply the local grid factor. Convert kWh to CO₂e using the carbon intensity of the local electricity grid — the same screen is “cleaner” on a low-carbon grid than a coal-heavy one. This is why market matters.
  3. Divide by impressions. Footprint per impression = total operational CO₂e ÷ delivered impressions. Reconcile against your proof-of-play and impression counts so the denominator is real.
  4. Use a recognised framework. Align to an industry methodology (Ad Net Zero / the cross-industry GMSF-type frameworks, or a credible vendor calculator) rather than inventing your own, so the number is comparable and defensible.

You don’t need perfect telemetry to start — a well-documented estimate from metered samples and grid factors beats no answer. Just label it an estimate and show your working.

Cutting the emissions that matter

Because screen power dominates, the highest-leverage reductions are operational and mostly also save you money:

  • Dim to the room. Indoor beauty venues don’t need outdoor brightness. Sensible brightness and ambient-light dimming cut both energy and glare — and a calmer screen suits the space.
  • Schedule to opening hours. A screen blazing at 3am serves no audience and burns carbon. Tie duty cycle to venue hours and daypart patterns via your remote management.
  • Spec efficient hardware. At procurement, efficiency (and a long service life that amortises embodied carbon) is a real selection criterion, not just a price one.
  • Favour low-carbon-grid markets where you have the choice — it changes the per-impression number directly, and ties into where you launch.
  • Keep screens alive longer. A display that lasts seven years instead of four halves the embodied carbon per impression-year. Reliability and sustainability point the same way.

Report it without greenwashing

A sustainability claim you can’t substantiate is worse than none — ad standards bodies are actively policing vague “green” claims, and a buyer’s procurement team will check. The honest report:

  • State the methodology and boundary. What’s included (screen power, players), what’s estimated, what’s excluded (embodied carbon, if so). Transparency is the credibility.
  • Separate measured from estimated. Metered energy is measured; grid factors and impression denominators are modelled. Label each, the same discipline as reporting to clients.
  • Don’t claim “carbon neutral” off offsets you can’t stand behind. Reductions you can prove beat offsets you can’t.
  • Give buyers the per-impression number in a form they can drop into their own campaign footprint — that’s what wins the tender line.

Done this way, sustainability becomes a sales asset: a credible, low, well-documented footprint is a reason to buy, and it slots straight into the media kit.

  • Pull local grid carbon factors for your markets and compute a first per-impression estimate.
  • Set dimming and opening-hours scheduling fleet-wide — the fastest cut, and it saves money.
  • Write a one-page footprint methodology you can hand to a buyer, with measured/estimated clearly labelled.
